Introducing Myself

Welcome to my first post!

Before moving to Sweden, I never thought I would do anything different than clinical counselling in the area of reproductive health. I loved my work, what a privilege to listen to women’s stories, putting my capacity for empathy to work and sharing knowledge.

Then, a move to Stockholm propelled me into a whole new profession, working as a learning assistant in an IB international school. I love seeing the difference I can make in students’ lives. My counselling background has proven to be beneficial in working in the classroom, supporting students’ learning needs, collaborating with teachers, providing empathy and patience to help facilitate academic and social obstacles. It’s rewarding and challenging all at the same time.

It's been four years and I have come to recognize that the supports I provide my students, those with intellectual disabilities and behavioural concerns, are the same supports that would benefit many more students with different needs, instead of waiting for them to fail first. In pursuing Teaching, I am drawn to the idea of universal supports for all students as well as the IB concept of student-centered education.

I recognize there is so much to learn about the world of Teaching and to put into practice. Right now, for me, when students look over their shoulder, I hope they see a teacher-in-the-making who encourages them, believes in their ability, and empowers them to believe in themselves. I strongly believe, because I experienced it myself thanks to my grade nine English teacher (although I wish it happened sooner), when students see that someone cares about them and invests in them, they have an authentic and motivational reason to learn.
