Hattie's Visible Learning: A Grade 8 French Class Case Study

In this unit, we learned about the many factors that contribute to student achievement via Hattie's Visible Learning Influences and Effect Size. These factors can include everything from cognitive ability to parental involvement and other environmental factors. As a teacher, it is important to review and analyze which of these factors influence each student’s achievement positively and negatively and use this data to inform our instructional strategies and practices. This information helps to diagnose our students’ academic and needs. It can also help to identify areas for improvement in the classroom or school environment, policies, and processes.

In this activity, my cohorts and I had to individually create an infographic to demonstrate our learning in recognizing these influences and thinking of ways that we can differentiate the instruction to meet their academic and development needs.

Here is my infographic:

While I initially dredged learning to use Piktochart and left the assignment until the end, it was actually fun to engage with material in such a visual format. It communicates the information quickly and clearly and in a pleasing way. I had a lot of fun with it.

I can see the value in using infographics in the classroom as well. Not only for teaching but for students to demonstrate their learning, especially the struggling students who need the content and assessments to be stimulating and creative.
