Benefits of Evaluating

The video observations are a brilliant tool to learn how to teach; it cannot be learned solely in class or through readings. Throughout the program , videos have been a great method of being exposed to new and different approaches that we had not thought of beforehand. Even though I have observed many teachers in my role as a student assistant, I am not consciously assessing. Whereas the videos, with prompts of what I should observe and assess, and in reference to the rubric, give me the space and time to reflect on their practices. I can thoughtfully take note of their strengths and areas for improvement in various aspects of the class such as routines, participation, instruction strategies, management strategies, student engagement and much more. I hope this way of learning continues when I become a teacher, having opportunities to sit in my peers' classroom and be open to being influenced by them and trying out new ways of teaching.

Benefits of Being Evaluated using a Rubric

Rubrics help me to become more aware of my learning process and progress. Firstly, they offer explicit performance criteria so I know the level of performance that is expected of me and motivates me to learn and reach those standards. Also, rubrics contribute to transparent assessment, one that is objective, not subjective. The evaluator is not influenced by anything other than the rubric.

Rubrics, I think, are also a great tool to facilitate self-assessment, as my cohort and I experienced for the baseline video. Looking over the rubric, I think I was true with my assessment, maybe because we are more likely to be harder on ourselves than others would be. Evaluating ourselves provides us with a more concrete reflection than if we didn’t have access to the rubric.

Rubrics can also improve student learning by allowing students to peer-assess and self-assess assignments. Through scoring guidelines, students can learn the value of giving and getting feedback from themselves and others.
